The Object Library is an experience driven platform that links you and your under–utilised goods with the community. It is an experimental system, a system whose focus is on the experience of swapping goods rather than the commerce of such an exchange. A system that re–establishes exchanges in ways that aren’t just based around economic value.
We all need items once or twice a year that we don’t need everyday. We don’t want to go damaging our bank accounts on one–off purchases, but still need these things here and there. That drill worth $300, those golf clubs that only see the light of day once or twice a month. All items of great value with a lifespan that isn’t being maximised.
The Object Library will allow individuals to borrow, lend out and swap these things with their neighbours, just when they need them. It also exists to reinvigorate a much lost sense of neighbourliness in our highly anonymous and urbanised lives. It is a catalyst for kinship and collaboration – a tangible community hub that taps into ‘person–to–person exchanges that cannot be app’ed’ (Tonkinwise, 2014).
