Adjacent is a design-led research project centred around methods of procedural and participatory mapping, and systems-based design. Born out of an intersection of interests in generative systems, experimental mapping and diagramming, and participatory design practice, the project is primarily concerned with an infrastructural approach to mapping which requires users to engage with a system in order to experience the map.
All events occur at a specific point in space, and at a specific moment in time; that is, they have a spatio-temporal location. Human conventions for the measurement of space and time, while subjective to human experience, are a pervasive baseline which can be referenced to locate a user within the scales that make up that infrastructure of measurement. Using the values that define this location, Adjacent generates abstract electronic audio, effectively creating an emergent auditory map of space and time.
